When my girlfriend saw them play this song live, she started to cry.
It makes me sad that these guys broke up.

Just drove back a car my brother gave me from Salt Lake City to Cleveland. We ended up having to rush more than we had hoped, so I couldn’t get out of the car for pictures very much, but I just uploaded a few to flickr. The one here was taken while driving northeast on 220 in Wyoming while the sun was setting more or less behind us.

birthday boys and peace
Some WV shit I published for the week of 9/6.
The Day the Music was Born (daily cut).
- Buddy Holly was born 9.7.36. I wrote about a Don McLean cover of “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore” because it’s a much better song than “American Pie.”
Forever 27 Together (daily cut).
- Pigpen McKernan was born 9.8.45. I wrote about a version of “Turn on Your Lovelight” that he sang with Janis Joplin, both members of the 27-club. They’re also former lovers which would seem pretty obvious after hearing them sing together.

Chillout Radio (playlist).
- A commenter described it as “an aging hippies idea of chill.” I am still trying to decide whether to find that offensive or not, especially since my two favorite tracks there are by Sleepy Sun and George Benson. I’m going to try to do a Chillout Grooves mix, but I’m not sure if there’ll be enough shit in the vault for it.
Songs for Peace (playlist).
- For the 9/11 anniversary. I find it strange that I always have to tip-toe around politics for work-related stuff, but who really gives a shit when you can let John Lennon and Bob Dylan speak for you? Yoko’s out of tune as always on “Give Peace a Chance,” but it’s a funky version with Stevie Wonder on it, too.

You're Fucking the Best
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.] Artist: Adam's Castle
Album: ViCES
Plays: 10Adam’s Castle is a 3-piece band - keys, drums and bass - originally from Michigan and eventually reassembled in Brooklyn, NY. On their previous LP, Deathless, Sami Jano played piano exclusively; on the upcoming Vices he introduces a new arsenal of noise including a “tweaked out Rhodes, extra-terrestrial samples, loop pedals and other mind-altering effects” that take the instrumental rock-grooves to where they should be. On thicker pieces like “VLM” and “Alarm Clock,” these new sounds emphasize the tunes’ heavy psychedelic leanings, inviting the listener to close their eyes and see the cosmos. For more upbeat pieces like “You’re Fucking the Best” and “But Do You Have a Flag?”* they add a layer of ambiance that blows air into the dancey hooks the compositions are based on.
Triple Down Records is taking an interesting approach to the new album’s release that’s also worth noting. In exchange for your email address, you can join the Vices Rollout Club and get a free track or two sent to you each week leading up to the October 19th release. Each installment also includes unique artwork; having seen many concert posters for Triple Down showcases, I can assure you these will be worth the price of your email address alone (check out one of Tricia Kleinhot’s jams below, whose artwork will accompany the tracks released on 9/28).
It’s an excellent album and a fun release plan but, more importantly, Adam’s Castle is a band you should see live. Zach Eichenhorn is a sick drummer who resembles a millipede when he plays, appendages moving in all directions at once; you’d never guess it based on audio alone, though, because he plays so smoothly and works so tastefully with bassist Eric Adams. To better replicate the live experience, check out “You’re Fucking the Best” after drinking too much tequila. I’d even imagine that outside of Brooklyn people might drop their guard and dance as much as the music deserves…give Adam’s Castle your email addy for some dope free stuff, they’ll let you know when they’re in town, and then you tell me.

*Album gets extra points for containing an Eddie Izzard reference.
